Ionia Daily Sentinel -- 21 Dec 1909
Rev.  David A. Jewell, for nearly sixty years a resident of Ionia county, died 
this morning at his residence, 342 Bliss Street.  Mr. Jewell had been unwell  
for some time and his death occurred this morning at nine o'clock.  He was 81 
years of  age.  David Albert Jewell was born in  New York, March 7,  1829.   In  
1856 he moved to Michigan  settling in  Ionia county.  He has been in the city 
about 32 years. 

When first coming to Ionia he settled across the  river on what was then the  
Stillman Jenks farm, now the Webber farm.  There they lived until their removal 
(unreadable) Mr. Jewell married Miss Nancy A.  Kenny before his departure from  
New York state April  9, 1851.   Mr. Jewell was ordained as a Presbyterian 
minister in Ionia thirty years ago.  Since that time he has been actively 
engaged as a Sunday school missionary having charge during the  first years of 
that work of the district of northern Michigan and Wisconsin.  During later 
years however, he has had charge only of Michigan.

He was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted in the First Michigan 
Engineers and Mechanics.  He was a member of Wm. H. Borden post, G. A. R.   
Surviving Mr. Jewell are two brothers and a sister, Mrs. Mary  B. Shepherd, of 
Towanda, Pa., Rev. J.  S. Jewell, of Claremont, California and W. H. Jewell of 
342 Bliss street, this city.  The funeral will be held Thursday from the house 
at 1:30 and from the Baptist church at 2 o'clock.

Ionia Sentinel - 31 December  1909:    The bearers at the funeral  of Rev. D. A. 
Jewell  were  Elders  Andrew Jackson and E. J.  VanDoren of  the Presbyterian 
church, and four nephews of deceased:  Prof.  Stillman G. Jenks of Kalamazoo,  
Ray  C. Jewell of Howell, and F.  A. Genung and G. R.  Allen of Muskegon.
