JOHNS, IONIA, DIED ON SUNDAY Dr. Joseph Johns, 64, Ionia physician and surgeon, died at 7 a.m. Sunday at Blodgett Memorial hospital at Grand Rapids thirteen days after he collapsed in his office while interviewing a patient. Death was attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage. The Ionia surgeon had been in poor health for the last few years and recently returned from a Florida vacation which he cut short to return to his Ionia practice. Born at Van, Armenia, on May 10, 1882, Dr. Johns came to the United States in 1904 to Boston where he worked as a shoemaker for a time. He came to Michigan a short time later and continued his education in Battle Creek. He had attended a missionary school in Van. Leaving Battle Creek he entered the University of Illinois where he studied medicine ad was graduated in 1911 from the medical school. He came directly to Ionia and set up his practice. In 1919 and 1920 he served his internship at Providence hospital, Detroit, and in 1920 went to Glasgow, Scotland and Paris, France, where he took post graduate medical work. At the time of his death Dr. Johns was physician and surgeon at the Ionia state reformatory and Ionia state hospital. He had served as chief examining officer of the Ionia county draft board since its inception, as president of the Ionia-Montcalm County Medical society, and was a member of the state medical group and the American Medical society. As an Ionia physician and surgeon for 37 years he had delivered more than 2,767 babies although in the past few years he had taken fewer cases because of his health. As an ever diligent supporter of an Ionia hospital, Dr. Johns was instrumental in securing the first privately owned hospital in Ionia which he opened by a Belding supporter of all conservation programs, Dr. Johns was a life member of the Ionia county Fishing and Hunting club. He was likewise a life member of the Ionia Elks and belonged to the Methodist church and Ionia Rotary club. Dr. Johns was a member of the medical staff of Clinton County Memorial hospital at St. Johns as well as of the Ionia County Memorial hospital. He was a visiting surgeon of Blodgett and St. Mary's hospital at Grand Rapids, and at one time was on the medical staff of Butterworth hospital. He was married in 1924 at Lansing to Miss Esther Braman of Vickeryville. Survivors are Mrs. Johns, a son, Raffee, who is to be graduated from Ionia high school in June; two brothers, George M. Johns of Detroit and Narses Ohanasian of Boston and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Ohennesian, also of Boston. Funeral services will be held from the Ionia Methodist church at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be at Highland Park cemetery. The body will repose at the Myers funeral home until the time of the funeral. Dr. Johns was a liberal contributor to medical journals and magazines. In December 18, 1938, he had published in the Michigan state medical society journal a report of a case entitled "Low Ileum Intussusception caused by Meckel's Diverticulum. Another was published in March of 1933 entitled, Intestinal obstruction due to impacted gall stone. Another case report was written and published in September in 1933 and another in June of 1931. Dr. Johns was also a contributor to the Armenian Mirror-Spectator, published in New York City.
