He was in good health, but complained of a pain in his lungs Sunday morning when he awoke. Later he felt better and got up built the fires, and his wife found him sitting in a chair unconscious. She summoned the son and grandson, but death came before medical aid arrived. Edward C. Johnson was born in Savanah, Wayne county, N.Y., February 21, 1841. During his childhood the family moved to Illinois, and a few years later to Michigan, settling on a farm two and a half miles south of Lyons. August 6, 1862, he enlisted in Co. D., 21st Michigan Infantry, and served through the Civil War, taking part in the campaign in Kentucky and Tennessee; the battles of Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga, and then participating in Sherman’s March to the Sea. He was honorably discharged June 8, 1865. On October 22 of the same year he was married at Portland to the companion who survives him. They lived upon the farm until 1887 when they moved to the village of Lyons, which has been his home until his death which came so suddenly Sunday morning, March 11, 1917, at the age of a few days over 76 years. He leaves beside his wife, one son, Louis, and a grandson, Edward. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Geo. A. Brown officiating. Interment in the Lyons cemetery.
