Johnson, retired electrician, died at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at Ionia Manor where he had been a patient four days. He had been in ill health several years. Born in Grand Rapids June 8, 1898, son of Frank and Carolina Erickson Johnson, he was a noted amateur speed skater in the Reeds lake area of Grand Rapids and won championships. He also played baseball and ice hockey. He was married to Onice V. McDaniel in Grand Rapids in 1927, and for several years was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone company and was electrician at Blodgett hospital. Prior to his retirement in 1960 due to ill health, he had lived in Battle Creek 22 years and was employed as electrician 21 years at United Steel and Wire company. He had resided at Eagle Point, route one, Woodland, two years. He was a member of Wealthy Street Baptist church in Grand Rapids and while living in Battle Creek, attended the Battle Creek Bible church and at Eagle Point attended the Congregational church. Surviving are his wife, Onice; three daughters, Mrs. Elvera Wenzel and Mrs. Carol Ann Cortez of Detroit, and Mrs. Norma Nyman of Eagle Point; one son, Frank of Battle Creek; three grandchildren; two brothers, C. Oscar Johnson and Harry of East Grand Rapids. Funeral service will be at Pickens funeral chapel Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Paul Bennehoff will officiate and interment will be at Greenwood cemetery in Grand Rapids.
