He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Winford Johnson, 230 Adams Street. The explosion took plaster from the dining room wall and tore a door off its hinges. A flash fire which smoldered in the partitions was extinguished by neighbors before the Ionia fire department which was summoned arrived. Neighbors removed Johnson from the house and he was rushed to the Sheridan Community hospital by Ralph Johnson, special deputy in Palo and a relative of the injured man. Johnson died at the hospital at 3 a.m. Tuesday of burns of the entire body. He had second and third degree burns from the waist up, internal burns of the face and severe shock. Mr. Johnson was born April 22, 1918, near Lowell. He attended Ionia schools and was a farmer before entering the service. He served with Company H in the Pacific and was wounded in December, 1942 in New Guinea. He was discharged from service in August, 1945. At the time of his death, he was employed at Gibson's. He had lived in Palo for the past eight years. He was past noble grand of Palo I.O.O. F., a member of the Rebekah lodge and secretary-treasurer of Company H, Ionia 128th Infantry 32nd Division Reunion Association. Surviving him are his wife, the former Lorraine Ackerson whom he married July 12, 1941; two sons, his parents; four sisters and a brother. Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Palo Baptist church. Burial will be in Palo Cemetery. There will be I.O.O.F. services and military services at the graveside.
