LYONS – A motorcycle ride ended in tragedy for one Portland man early Wednesday 
morning.

According to a press release, Ionia County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched 
to Keefer Hwy north of Peckins Road in Lyons to investigate a reported 
motorcycle accident around 6:21 a.m.

Victor Paul Johnson, a 54 year-old man from Portland, was discovered dead on 
scene in a resident’s lawn. During the initial investigation, deputies 
determined that the trike-style motorcycle driven by Johnson had hit a deer, 
causing him to lose control and subsequently hit a tree. 

“The motorcycle sustained extreme damage and was totaled,” said Deputy Rick 
Charon. “It was determined that the victim had succumbed to the injuries he 
sustained in the accident.”

Charon stated that the accident had been called in by a passerby on his way to 
work. 

At this time, alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident. The 
accident remains under investigation. 

The Ionia County Sheriff’s department was assisted by the Lyons/Muir Fire 
Department, Portland Ambulance and Ionia County Central Dispatch.
