Johnson, 90, of Orleans died unexpectedly Monday afternoon August 24, 2009 at his home. Ken was born May 28, 1919 in Lyons, the son of Charles and Amelia Mills Johnson. In earlier years, Ken was a mechanic at Jonas Farm Supply in Belding for 21 years and later served as postmaster for the Village of Orleans for 23 years. Ken was a past member of the Mohawk Archers, Belding. He served on the Orleans School Board and was a driving force behind the decision to construct an updated school building in the early 1960s. In his younger years, Ken was a talented shortstop and second baseman on several Ionia baseball and softball leagues. Ken had a natural ability for woodworking, carpentry and mechanics. He built his own home. He designed and built a houseboat, named Float We Hope, which the family enjoyed for thirty years. He loved his garden. Ken lived by the Golden Rule and many benefited from his philosophy - he plowed the neighbors' driveways in winter, took vegetables from his garden to elderly neighbors, fixed their cars and was part of the Orleans Volunteer Fire Department. "Kenny" always had a story to tell and loved to make people laugh. Ken was married sixty-six years to Donna Hoenicke of Portland. Each winter for over 20 years they wintered in Florida and Ken couldn't wait to get there to relax; he loved to ride his bike, watch the boats on the river and visit with friends. He will be greatly missed. Donna survives along with their children: Jean and Bruce Laramy of Grand Rapids, Terry and Chari Johnson of Laurium, MI, and Deborah and Tom Wood of Grand Rapids. Ken is also survived by nine grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren with one more on the way, one great great grandchild on the way, and his siblings Leslie Johnson, Marjorie Stine, Joan and Les Garland and Catherine Higbee. He was preceded by his parents, brother, Paul, sisters Mary and Barbara, and grandson, Aaron Chickering. Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Friday at Shiloh Community Church, Orleans with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Interment will be in Orleans Township Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 PM at the Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Shiloh Community Church or the American Cancer Society.
