Johnson veteran merchant of Palo died at his home there Saturday afternoon at 5 o'clock, following a period of ill health dating from an attack of illness last winter. He was born in Orleans county, New York, September 19, 1856 and was 72 years old at the time of his death. He spend his boyhood days and received his education at Lyndonville. He taught school in Lyndonville for a few years and there it was that he was married to Miss Ella I. Bacon, February 19, 1880. Mr. Johnson came to Michigan about 1882, locating at Petoskey, and engaging in business there for about two years. He moved to Palo about October 15, 1884 where he remained continuously for the remainder of his life time. Directly upon moving to Palo he entered the grocery business with Gideon Noel, under the name of Noel and Johnson. A few years after this partnership he became postmaster and held this position for many years. Mr. Johnson finally purchased the interest of Mr. Noel in the business and for a number of years was in business with Frank Gaylord. While still engaged in the grocery business Mr. Johnson purchased from I. S. Jeffers, the Palo Post and edited this newspaper for a time. He was active in Republican politics and for the last three years had been serving as township clerk. He had also held the office of township treasurer and had been a justice of the peace during a term of many years. Mrs. Johnson died at her home in Palo September 4, 1922. July 24, 1924 he took for his second wife, Miss Mary D. Hubbard of Palo, who lavished upon him in the days of his declining health, loving attention and care. Throughout his life he was active in church work and served both the Baptist and Methodist churches at Palo as Sunday school superintendent. Early in life he affiliated with the Presbyterian church, but after moving to Palo where there was no church of that faith, he became active in the Baptist church and later following his second marriage joined with this wife in worshipping at the Methodist church. With an intense interest in civic affairs and a willingness to do more than his share, his death was a great loss to the community in a material way. His interest in his fellowmen and especially in young people never waivered. He was never so happy as when able to do a good turn for a friend. He is survived by the widow, a son, A. G. Johnson of Palo, another son, C. Stanley Johnson of Detroit, and Lora Johnson at home. One niece, Mrs. George Faucett resides in Grand Rapids and another niece resides in Fenwick. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist church, Palo, with Dr. Willard K. Spencer, Ionia, an intimate friend, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. F. M. Drake, pastor of the church. Burial was in Palo cemetery.
