Johnson, 43, of 719 Forest street, died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at his home of what Ionia officers said was a self inflicted gunshot wound. Coroner Wallace H. Jackson and Deputy Sheriff Loyal Hodson said a 16-gauge shotgun was found beside Johnson in the basement of the house. Mrs. Max Grell, his mother-in-law, said she heard the shot and upon investigation found Johnson. Coroner Jackson said Johnson had been despondent because of ill health. He was born December 4, 1909, in Galt, Ont., son of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Johnson, former residents of Montreal. Johnson had been a resident of Ionia for the last 20 years. For the last three years he has been employed at the Ionia Manufacturing company as an inspector. He was married in 1936 to Coral Grell of Ionia. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul church and a member of the Elks. Surviving besides his wife are six sisters, Mrs. C. E. Yarnell of Detroit, Mrs. Joseph Wright of Montgomery, Ala., Miss Ann Johnson of Ypsilanti and Miss Eleanor Johnson, Mrs. Walter Grey and Mrs. Arthur Sparks of Galt, Ont. Services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Myers funeral home by the Rev. Fr. John S. Fons. Bearers will be members of the Elks lodge. Subsequent Publication: Saturday, January 17, 1953 Services for Edward Johnson, 43, who died Tuesday afternoon, January 13, were conducted Friday afternoon at Myers funeral home by the Rev. Fr. J. N. Hoogterp. Arthur Lind, Leo Costello, Amerigo Agostini, Roman Slowinski, John Lowe and Charles Burns were bearers. In charge of the flowers were Mrs. Donald Ackerman and Mrs. Eugene Hackett. Interment was in Highland Park cemetery. Attending the services from out of town were Mrs. C. E. Yarnell and daughter and Karl Grell of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gray, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sparks of Galt, Ont.; Miss Ann Johnson of Ypsilanti; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hadley of Traverse City; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gittleman of Lansing; and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Blauwickel of Pewamo.
