She was born Jan. 12, 1940, in Smyrna, the daughter of James Otis and Muriel Serena Howell Mays. Following high school, she earned her cosmetology degree and owned and operated Bea’s Beauty Salon. She married Alger Lee “Toby” Johnson on May 2, 1959, at Belding. Bea enjoyed golfing, bowling, needlework and shopping. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Otis and Muriel Serena Mays; and a sister, Janis Thrush. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Toby Johnson of Gowen; their children, Katharine Alice Johnson of Caledonia, Brenda Lee Johnson-Patrick of White Cloud, Robert James and Sally Johnson of Greenville and Jill Ann and Mike Scott of Carrollton, Texas; one brother, Jim Mays of Livonia; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Joyce and Robert Carlson and Shirley and Jim Cowles, all of Belding, and Becky Olsen of Greenville; six grandchildren, Danielle and Matt Mulholland, Janette Glover, Jenny Glover, Keaton Johnson, Drew Johnson and Lauren Scott; two great-grandchildren on the way; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home, Greenville, with the Rev. Darwyn Hassert, pastor of Smyrna Bible Church, Gowen, officiating. Burial will follow in Little Denmark Cemetery, Gowen.
