(Sam) Johnson, 76, R2 Lake Odessa, well-known harness race horse owner and enthusiast, died at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday at Ionia County Memorial Hospital. He had been admitted Sunday evening. Mr. Johnson was born April 23, 1889, in Odessa Township, in the home where he lived his entire life. His parents were Frank and Abigail (Phillips) Johnson. On Aug. 24, 1914, he married Marjorie Stevens of Brinton. A retired rural mail carrier and farmer, Mr. Johnson was district director of the U.S. Trotting Association, superintendent of speed of the Southern Michigan Racing Circuit, the Ionia Free Fair and the Michigan Harness Association. He raced his own horses on many of Michigan’s tracks. He was a member of F. & A.M. Lodge No. 395, was a former member of the Lake Odessa Board of Education and Lake Odessa Fair Association and was active in many other civic organizations. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife; one son, Robert of Belding; a daughter, Mrs. Chester (Betty) Anderson of Grand Haven; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; a brother, Thomas of Lake Odessa, and a sister, Miss Gail Johnson of Spokane, Wash. The body reposes at the Pickens Chapel in Lake Odessa where services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday.
