Johnson Of Lake Odessa Dies Sunday Services for Thomas Johnson, 92, prominent Lake Odessa lawyer who died early Sunday, Nov. 23, at Community Hospital in Battle Creek, are to be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Pickens Chapel in Lake Odessa with the Rev. Luther Brokaw and the Rev. Marvin Zimmerman officiating with burial in Lakeside Cemetery. Atty. Johnson had been in ill health for a long time. Atty. Johnson had practice law for 61 years in Lake Odessa, retiring in 1965. He was graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1896 and completed his secondary training at Ann Arbor and Ferris Institute in 1897. He was a professor at Lake Odessa High School in 1898 and 1899, then entered the University of Michigan where he obtained his law degree in 1904. He began his practice at Lake Odessa. Atty. Johnson was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, he was a past master of the Lake Odessa Masonic Lodge and past patron of the Order of Eastern Star. He held a life membership in the Odd Fellows Lodge, was a member of the State Bar Association, was district governor and consulting rosarian of the American Rose Society and was active in other groups, and was long prominent in civic affairs. He was born on Aug. 1, 1877, in Lake Odessa, the son of Frank and Abigail (Phillips) Johnson. He married Mertie Walter on June 15, 1905. Theirs was the first marriage in the present Methodist Church at Lake Odessa. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Thomas Dwight of Brussels, Belgium, and Walter of Battle Creek; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren, and a sister, Gail Johnson of Spokane, Wash.
