Aug. 27, 1962 PURL JOHNSON Purl Johnson, 73, former Ionia business man, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon at Ionia County Memorial hospital after being admitted in the forenoon. He owned and operated the Johnson Supermarket on East Main street from 1941 until January 4, 1954 when it was sold to Fred and Melvin Thwaites. Prior to that Mr. Johnson worked for the W.G. Longe Market 50 years. He was born in Ronald township, Ionia County, March 10, 1889, the son of John and Martha Goeble and had spent his entire life in this county. May 26m, 1919 he was married to Fern Curtis in Ionia, and for the past 30 years had resided at their home at 442 Jones street. Mr. Johnson was a member of First Baptist church and Girard-Horrocks Post American Legion. he served with the Red Arrow, 32 Division, in World War I. Surviving are his wife, Fern; a son, Fred Johnson of Greenville; two grandchildren; one brother, James of Lansing, and three sisters, Mrs. Ida Winchell and Mrs. Mary Myers of Ionia, and Mrs. Etta Packard of Florida. Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist church with burial at Easton cemetery. A Memorial fund for First Baptist church has been established. The body will be at Boynton funeral home until time for the service.
