T. JOHNSON HELD LAST SUNDAY Death Followed An Emergency Operation Here Last Friday Hiram T. Johnson, 87, resident of Saranac for 70 years, died in Ionia County Memorial Hospital at 5:15 Friday morning, Dec. 2, following an emergency appendectomy. Mr. Johnson was born in New York State, January 21, 1861. His father, Rev. Johnson was minister of the Free Methodist Church in Howard city and the family moved to Saranac from Howard City in 1879. As a young man he was employed in Saranac and also sold insurance and real estate. In 1893 he founded the Saranac Advertiser, which he owned and operated until 1938. At that time he and his son, Norman, now deceased, sold the paper to Floyd and Kenneth Gibson. The Johnsons operated a real estate and insurance business as H.T. and N.S. Johnson, until the death of Norton Johnson several years ago and Mr. Johnson continued in this business until his death. For many years Mr. Johnson was active in township, village and county affairs, and served as deputy oil inspector for tour years under George English and Gov. a. E. Sleeper of Bad Axe. He was widely known among the newspaper fraternity of Michigan and was a past president of the Michigan Press Association. Only surviving relatives are a grandson, Norton Johnson of Western Michigan College of Education, Kalamazoo, and a granddaughter, Mrs. LaVerne Rudolph, of Holland, and two great-grandchildren. Rev. Glenn McCarty, officiated at the funeral service held Sunday afternoon. Burial was in Saranac Cemetery beside his wife and son, Norman, who died several years ago.
