June 5, 1963 Arthur E. Johnson, 73, an Ionia merchant since 1920, was found dead in bed at his home at 460 Price street at 9:30 a.m. He had been dead about 3 hours. His body was found by his son Willis, who lives with his parents and who has been operating the Johnson store on West Main street since his father left active management. A native of Manistee, Mr. Johnson came to Ionia in 1916 taking a job at the McGannon Shoe store. He opened his own store in 1920 by purchasing the John Beattie shoe store and had been active in its operation until three years ago when he retired. He still returned to the store to assist the present staff when necessary. He was born March 27, 1890 at Manistee, the son of Caroline and Emil Johnson. In 1908 he opened a men's store at Buckley which he operated for two years, moving to Chicago two years later as an employee of Marshall-Field & Co.. Later he worked for Frederick's shoe store three years before moving to Ionia in 1916. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Myers funeral home on East Main street with burial at Balcom cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Ella M. to whom he was married February 26, 1914 at Manistee; a son, Willis; a brother H.V. Johnson of Carson City; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Erickson of Oak Lawn, ILL., and Rose Johnson of Chicago. He was a life member of the Ionia Elks and a member of the Modern Woodmen. A memorial for the heart fund is being established.
