Johnson, on the 3d day of April, another of the pioneers of Ionia passed over the river into the silent land. He was born in Providence, R.I., in the year 1813. The family removed to Herkimer county, N.Y.; and here young Johnson remained until 1836, when he came to Michigan, and selected Ionia for his future home. The Dexter colony had come here from near Utica some three years previous. For 47 years he has been an active and enterprising citizen of this town, interesting himself in its growth and prosperity. He belonged to a family of eleven children, of whom six survive him - three brothers and three sisters. One of the brothers, James O. Johnson, has for some years been a citizen of the town of Ionia. In 1840, Ethan S. Johnson married Jane B. Whipple, and for 43 years they have gone on together in life's journey, happily and hopefully meeting its cares and enjoying its blessings till the day of parting came. There were seven children, four sons and three daughters, and the mother left in bereavement at his departure. When a young man, at the age of twenty, he was baptized and united with the Baptist church of Ionia. He vindicated the sincerity of his christian profession by an upright and religious life. Any divergence from the true style of christian life in him was not intentional and radical but incidental. It is not a small thing for a man to have lived a commendable christian life for half a century, amid the cares and responsibilities and the clash of evils, in such a world as ours. He has held the following positions of trust and honor in this community during his long life: County treasurer, register of deeds, postmaster, supervisor, and at his death he was justice of the peace, coroner, and one of the board of charity of friendless children. For some years he was in the mercantile business.
