Clarence Johnston Pioneer Passes Away

Mr. Johnston will be well and favorably remembered by many of the older 
residents of Fairplains, Eureka and Otisco.  

Clarence Johnston was born in Ray, Macomb county, Michigan more than 70 years 
ago – January 15, 1846, and died at his home in Saranac, Michigan, February 28, 
1916.

He was the son of Dr. Nathan and Mary Johnston of Macomb county.  When a young 
man he came to Fairplains and married Elnera Crawford, daughter of Bradley B. 
and Jane Crawford.  To this union twelve children were born, four of these 
dying in infancy.  Mrs. Johnston passed away eleven years ago.  The oldest, 
W.B. Johnston died at San Pedro one year ago.  Besides his second wife, Ella 
Johnston, there are left seven children to mourn his death: Mrs. G. Jensen, 
Kalkaska, Mich.; Mrs. C.M. Campbell, Sebawaing; Mrs. Geo. E. Shipman and Mrs. 
H.E. Morse of Flint; Earl Johnston of Chicago, and Mrs. W.G. and C.B. Johnston 
of this vicinity.

Mr. Johnston was a member of the Saranac M.E. church; a man of few words and no 
display but to young and old he was known as our friend, always there, 
everywhere, just as we needed help.  We like best to think of him as we knew 
him, just Clarence, our neighbor, our friend, our teacher of life’s duties, and 
fellow-worker in upholding every moral enterprise of home and society.

He had been a patient sufferer for several months of diabetes, being confined 
to his bed only a few days previous to his death.  The burial took place in the 
family lot at Otisco.
