Johnston, 48, of 1730 Jordan Lake Ave., passed away Wednesday afternoon at Pennock Hospital, Hastings following an extended illness. She was born March 21, 1926 at Lake Odessa, a daughter of Wayne and Mildred (Haynes) Shade and was a lifelong resident of the area. Mrs. Johnston had undergone major surgery at Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo was also hospitalized at Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo and had been at Pennock Hospital since October 22. Her hobbies included her flower gardens, making quilts and rugs, collecting vases and enjoying her grandchildren. Surviving are her husband Harold; a daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Priscilla) Keeler, Jr.;a son, Steven Runyan of Lake Odessa; three grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. Mildred Shade of Lake Odessa; four sisters, Mrs. Harold (Letha) Reese, Mrs. Gerald (Karolyn) Stalter of Clarksville, Mrs. Thomas (Sherrie) Wacha of Sunfield and Mrs. Shelby (Linda) Irvin of Lake Odessa; five brothers, G. Brandon Shade of Lansing, Dean of Hastings, Marvin of Woodbury, Gene of Lake Odessa and Robert Hill of Richland. Funeral services were held Saturday at 3:30 at the Pickens-Koops Funeral Chapel. Rev. Gary Evans officiated with burial in Lakeside Cemetery.
