Another Publication: The Belding Banner, Thursday, April 8, 1943 Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock at St. Joseph’s Catholic church in this city for Alfred J. Jonas, aged 77 years, and a life long resident of this community, whose death took place at Ionia, in a convalescent home, where he had been cared for for two weeks past, on Sunday morning. Death came as a result of a stroke of paralysis and followed a long period of ill health. Mr. Jonas was born in Easton township and as a young man came to this city where he established the family home at 816 S. Bridge street, a short time after his marriage to Miss Anna Dehn, of Portland. For a time he was employed as a carpenter and later on as a cabinet maker in the refrigerator factories of this city. Leaving the factory he operated a saloon in the building now occupied by the Dehn Sons tavern, for a number of years and when prohibition put an end to that business he took up carpenter work again. When St. Joseph’s Catholic church was built in this city, he was employed by the contractor firm in the capacity of superintendent and he had charge of all details of the construction of the building, a matter which to his last days he took great pride in. After the construction of the church here, he went with the contractor firm which had the local job, to many other cities in this state where they had contracts and held the position as construction superintendent for a long time. For a number of years he had been residing in the home on S. Bridge street. Mrs. Jonas passed away in California several years ago and survivors are a daughter, Miss Agnes K. Jonas, of San Francisco, who was unable to attend the funeral rites; a sister, Mrs. Amelia Donner, of Ionia and a number of nephews and nieces. The death of a son, Matt Jonas, in World War No. 1, was a severe and heavy blow to Mr. Jonas and brought him a sorrow which time, the great healer, never really removed. Mr. Jonas was a life long and devout member of the Catholic church, a member of the Holy Name society of St. Joseph’s and also held life membership in the Ionia Elks lodge. Members of the local Holy Name society assembled at the home Tuesday evening to recite the rosary and many of them attended the funeral rites at the church Wednesday morning, at which Rev. Fr. Ralph Kelly, pastor of the local church, officiated, with Rev. Fr. Lawrence L. Dorr, of Wayne, a former pastor here, preaching the funeral sermon. Pallbearers—all member of the Holy Name society—were Frank and Hubert Engemann, Arnold Schmidt, George Martin, William Drier and Albert J. Breimayer. Burial was in St. Joseph’s cemetery by the side of his son, Matt, who died during the first world war.
