Jones, highway commissioner, has at last been lifted. The news brings nothing to cheer the parents, but the fate of their son is now known. He was shot through the breast and instantly killed, according to a letter received from the Red Cross, which has been trying to locate him in one of the German prison camps since his reported capture, early in the summer. The letter says word came to the American Red Cross at Berne, from Frankfurt, that Private Orrin Jones was shot and instantly killed, but there are no further particulars. It is the supposition, however, that he was herded in a German prison camp at Frankfurt and was killed while trying to escape, which would account for the inability of the Red Cross to locate him at any of the German camps. Now that American prisoners are being released it is evident some of them had knowledge of Private Jones’ fate and conveyed the information to the Red Cross. The letter expresses deep sympathy and seeks to comfort the parents by emphasizing the fact that the soldier was not obliged to suffer after being shot. It will be recalled that Private Jones was reported as missing after he had gone out in No- Man’s Land to bring in the body of an officer. The Red Cross tried to find him among the Americans who had been taken prisoners by the Germans, but did not succeed. However, it was the accepted belief of his parents that he had actually been captured and that they would hear from him when the war closed. Hear from him they did, but only to have their hopes dashed to pieces – only to take down the star on the service banner and replace it with one of gold.
