Ionia Weekly Standard - Jan. 29, 1909


Henry Jones died suddenly at his home, 349 State Street at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, 
January 25. Mr. Jones was born in the State of Ohio, Feb. 2, 1838. He came to 
Michigan when about 9 years old, the family locating in Ronald township, where 
was his home nearly all his life. He married to Emelia E. Lyon March 1, 1865. 
To this union was born one child, the wife of John Wheaton. Mrs. Wheaton has 
one step-brother, Rev. F.D. Lyon of Remus, who was present at the funeral.

Mr. Jones wife dies about 24 years ago. Since then he was an officer at the 
State Reformatory, where he was for about 20 years, part of the time as 
superintendent of the farm, and for a time in charge of team on traffic duty 
with the city. Everybody knew him, and everybody liked and respected him. He 
was a good man, with a good work for everybody.

He moved on his farm in Ronald less than a year ago. About three months ago he 
bought the Jay Mclaren place on State street and soon after with his son-in-law 
and family moved into same. 

He was a Mason, a member of the Blue lodge and of the Star lodge, and a large 
number of both were present at the brief funeral service at the house. The 
later and more complete service at Woodard lake church was attended by a large 
number of his neighbors and friends in that vicinity testifying to the 
affectionate respect in which he was held. The services were by Rev. D.H. 
Shelly of this city, the singing by Mrs. Eugene Smith and Mrs. H. L. Spencer. 
Interment was in Woodard Lake cemetery. The bearers were G.W. French, George 
Dodson, Wm. Slye and _._. Cotton.
