Jones, 92, of Greenville, passed away Tuesday evening, December 20, 2005, in the emergency room at Sparrow Health Systems-St. Lawrence Campus, Lansing. The son of William and Myrtle Keeney Jones, he was born on May 24, 1913 in Greenville. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Jones served with the U.S. Army as a military policeman in the Pacific theatre and was a life member of the Lester J. Sitts Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5065 in Sheridan. On July 3, 1947, he married the former Dora M. Apps. Lester retired from the C&O Railroad where he worked first as a track layer, and later as a cook. Outside of work, Lester enjoyed cooking, gardening and hunting. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora, on December 12, 1994; his parents; his stepmother, Lillian Longstreet Jones, who raised him; two sisters, Isabelle Petersen and Doris Miller; and four brothers, Howard, Harry, Louie, and Alvin Jones. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Steve Kelbert of Lansing; a son, Bruce Jones of Greenville; two step-daughters, Geraldine Brough of Manton, Carolyn and Marco Wolschon of Sheridan; six grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Brown-Teman &Christiansen Funeral Home, Greenville, with the Rev. Norman Burger Jr., pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Lansing, officiating. Military honors, rendered by the Lester J. Sitts VFW Post 5065, will conclude the service, with burial taking place privately in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of one’s choice.
