Jones, aged 74 years, was found dead in his bed Friday morning at about 10 o’clock by Coroner Bruce G. Fales and…..(portion illegible)….when neighbors, alarmed over the fact that Mr. Jones, who operated a neighborhood grocery store in connection with his home at 416 S. Front St., had not opened up for business at the usual time. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Chase, who live across the street from the Jones store and residence, noticed that Mr. Jones was late in opening up and they went over to see about the matter. They tried to gain admittance to the store but could not arouse Mr. Jones and they then went to the Kern store, where they conveyed their fears that something might be wrong with Mr. Jones, to Mr. Dehn, who notified Coroner Fales. Mr. Fales, after going to the Jones residence and talking the matter over with the neighbors who had gathered, decided to force an entrance and he went in through a window and with Mr. Dehn, soon found Mr. Jones dead in his bed. All evidence pointed to the fact that Mr. Jones had peacefully slept away and the conclusion was that he had passed away shortly after he had retired on Thursday evening. Neighbors stated that Mr. Jones had not been in good health for some time and that he had complained of heart trouble and attacks for some time. Coroner Fales decided that there was no need for an inquest. He at once notified Lowell Jones, a nephew and foster-son at his home in Saginaw, who ordered the body removed to the Fales funeral home and later on in the day Lowell Jones came here and made arrangements for the funeral. William Elmore Jones was born in Bushnell township November 11, 1864 and was the son of Elmore and Elizabeth Jones. On October 27th, 1889 he was married to Miss Julia Donovan, who died February 21, 1928. Practically all of Mr. Jones’ life was spent in Ionia and Montcalm counties and with his wife he operated grocery stores at Vickeryville and Butternutt and later on a bakery at Carson City. For several years he was a steward for Belding Bros. & Co. in this city. He had resided in the Front street home, where death occurred, since 1924. Surviving are the nephew and foster-son, Lowell Jones, of Saginaw; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert Wright of Palo and Mrs. Benjamin Low of Duluth; and a brother, Jay Jones of Addison, Illinois. Funeral services were held at the Fales funeral home Monday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. Fred G. Dunbar of Ionia, a former pastor of the local Methodist church, officiating and burial was in the cemetery at Palo by the side of Mrs. Jones. Mr. Jones was a…(word illegible)…type of citizen and a friend and neighbor who was liked by all with whom he came in contact.
