From 1951-1956 he worked as an apprentice for Carl Heitman at his jewelry store in Ionia. Upon the sudden death of Carl Heitman in 1961, his widow, Irma, asked Bob if he would be interested in purchasing her husband's business so it could remain a viable business in downtown Ionia, considering him to be a person of dignity and integrity to carry on her husband's work. He continued the business of R.L.Jones Jewelers until 1999, when he sold it to Barry Trierweiler, who had been his apprentice, and it then became Trier Jewelers.
