Harold was born in Bay City, and grew up in Flint, the son of Stephen and Ida (Wegener) Kaczynski. He leaves his lifetime partner of 68 years, his wife, Helena; his son, David (Sandy) Kaczynski of Oak Harbor, Ohio; his daughter, Kay (William) Dawson; his grandchildren, Rebecca Dawson Foundas (Jason), Diana Dawson; two great-grandchildren, Tristan and Elena Foundas, all of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Esther Kaczynski of Flint, and a sister-in-law, Nettie Rosenthal of Pensacola, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Kaczynski, and his sister, Dorothy (Arthur) Fitzner. Harold was a star athlete and earned all-state hours in football and baseball at Flint Central High School in 1938 and 1939. He enrolled at Central Michigan University (CMU) in 1940. In 1941, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was called to active duty in 1943. He served as a flight engineer on a B-29 bomber and was based on Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Guam and Saipan, from where he crewed on missions over Japan. He was discharged in December 1945, and returned to CMU, graduating in 1947. He completed graduate studies at New York University and the University of Michigan. In the next 35 years, he taught government and physical education at White Cloud, Belding, Frankenmuth and Flint. He coached football and track and earned Michigan High School Coach of the Year in 1961. He was named star running back on CMU All Time team, college All-American in 1942, CMY Hall of Fame and Greater Flint Area Hall of Fame. He was a charter member of Michigan High School Coaches Association and served as its first vice president for 12 years. He was a member of the Detroit Free Press All-State Selection Committee and during the summers, he taught at coaching clinics. Harold and Helena retired in 1979 to spend summers at Black Lake and winters in Tucson, Ariz. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hiking, but his favorite activity was spending time with his family. Harold was a lifelong Lutheran and a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Cheboygan. A memorial to celebrate his life will be held in early summer.
