Jan. 27, 2016 BETTY LAURINE KAEDING Betty Laurine Kaeding, 92, formerly of Ionia, passed away at her place of residence, Green Acres of Standale, on Jan. 23, 2016. Betty was born June 22, 1923, to Harry B. and Alice Leach of Stanton, where she spent her childhood with her two brothers, Max (Barb) and Jack Leach, who preceded her. On July 12, 1941, Betty married her husband, Robert Kaeding (Deceased in 1969) and they relocated to Ionia, Michigan, where they raised their three children, Jane Kaeding Ransom of Ionia, Marcia (Tom) Koopers of Augusta, MI and Kurt (Stacy) Kaeding of Hilton Head Island, S.C., who survive her. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Erin Kaeding of Ashville, N.C. and Robin Kaeding of Orlando, FL; sister-in-law, Lois Leach along with special cousin, Ned Russell; and several nieces and nephews. Since taking up residence at Green Acres, she acquired many close friends and excellent caregivers whom she considered to be her second family. Betty thrived as a "stay-at-home" mom until the untimely death of her husband plunged her into the working world as a Special Education Teacher's Aide, followed by a career at Ionia County national Bank from which she retired. Until recently, she spent winters on Hilton head Island with her family and grandchildren cherishing every moment at her home away from home, Family always came first throughout her life, rounded out by avid gardening, some sharp Bridge playing and a few rounds of competitive golf. She was a fierce fan of college basketball and football and closely followed her Tiger and Wolverine teams. Betty was a member of the First United Methodist church and was a part of the Church Friendship Group. She served on the Ionia Housing Commission and was a member of the Ionia Hospital Cart N Lobby Association. Despite health issues and adversity, especially in her later years, she was determined to live life on her own terms with great strength of will and fortitude. Cremation has taken place. The family will meet for visitation at the Lehman Funeral Home in Ionia on Wednesday from 6-8 PM. the funeral service will be held 4 PM Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Ionia with Pastor Jon VanDop officiation. Inurnment will be in Balcom Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church.
