Feb. 16, 1976 A former Ionia resident and Spanish-American War veteran, Joseph C. Kalkofen, 100, of Euclid, Ohio, died February 3. He was born in Bendorf, Germany, June 24, 1875, and he came to Ionia when nine. He was married in Ionia in 1901, to Vercie Webber. Mr. Kalkofen enlisted at the beginning of the Spanish-American War and served the duration. He had worked for the Pere Marquette and Grand Trunk railroads until his retirement in 1940. He is an uncle to Mrs. Frank O'Mara and Mrs. Raymond Lapo of Lake Odessa. Services were conducted in Grand Rapids at St. Francis Xavier church.
