Dec. 1, 1995 IONIA- Dorothy M. Kanouse, 82, of Ionia died Wednesday, Nov. 29 at her home. She was born on June 8, 1913 in Ionia, the daughter of Frank and Whilamina (Fantow) Wheeler. She graduated from Ionia High School in 1930. She attended Ionia County Normal in 1932 and graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. Degree in Education and an M.S. in special education. She taught for 27 years for Ionia Public Schools and 10 years for the Ionia County Rural Schools and the Valley Farms School System in Lansing. She was a member and past president of the Retired Teachers Association and the Elks Antlerettes and was a member of the Women of the Moose, the Board of Trustees of the Ionia County Red Cross and the Ionia Historical Society. She is survived by daughters: Christine (Richard) Valentine, of Long Lake, Adel (Phillip) Hausserman, of Muir and Julianne Burns, of Ionia; sons: William (Julie) Kanouse of Trenton, Mich. and Charles (Gail) Kanouse, of Ionia; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Carrie Burns of Ionia. She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde H. "Mose" Kanouse on July 13, 1992 and her sister, Helen Inman in 1987. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, 1995 at the Cook Funeral Home in Ionia with Rev. Kenneth Harger from the Shiloh Community Church officiating. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Rich St. Chapel of Cook Funeral Home in Ionia. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Area Hospice or the Helping Hands of Ionia.
