Kelley, wife of H.D. Kelley, had suffered a stroke of apoplexy and had died within a half hour after without regaining consciousness. While the family and intimate friends were aware she had been ailing for some time past, no one had supposed her condition was dangerous as she had been especially active of late, having driven to Elsie to take supper with her daughter and family only the night before. On arising the next morning she suddenly cried out, “Oh, my head!” and fell on the bed, death coming before a doctor arrived. Lowella J. Canty was born in Nunica, this state, March 15, 1871, being 51 years, 2 months and 15 days of age at the time of her death. Her early life was spent in Gowan until she came to Lyons about thirty-one years ago. On June 21, 1893, she was united in marriage to Hugh D. Delley by the Rev. Wm. Judd. To them were born seven children, two dying in 1901. She leaves to mourn their loss a husband, five children as follows: David L. Kelley of Newaygo, Hugh M. and Gordon of Lyons, John and Mrs. Ross L. Carter of Elsie; a mother, Mrs. Lydia Farmer, of Grand Rapids; two sisters, Mrs. C. J. Barkman, of Lake City and Mrs. P.H. Kraft, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and a brother, Chas. Canty, of Jackson. Deceased was a charter member of the Lyons chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and had just finished serving two years as Worthy Matron; was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem at Ionia, of the Lyons Research club and a member and worker in the Grace Episcopal guild. A loving wife and devoted mother; she endeared herself to all by her many acts of kindness and charity and by her constant cheery nature and keen wit. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the home, and as a mark of respect, the schools and business places were closed during the service, which was conducted by Rev. A.R. Mitchell of Ionia, and the services at the grave were in charge of the Order of Eastern Star. The bearers were the four sons, a nephew and son-in-law. The funeral was one of the largest held here in years, and the wealth of floral offerings gave mute evidence of the loving esteem in which she was held by friends who are legion. The following guests from away were here to attend the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Ross Carter and son, Mrs. Harry Lee, John Kelley, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Carter, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Austin, of Elsie; David Kelley, Miss Bessie Hougthon, Newaygo; Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Carten, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Shoemaker, Mr. and Mrs. L.I. Hale, Mrs. E.B. Hale, Ionia; Mr. and Mrs. Vanaulsburg, Thos. and Benj. Ensley, Coopersville; Chas. Canty, Jackson; Mrs. Lydia Farmer, Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Barkman, Floyd and Miss Gertrude Barkman, Lake City; Mrs. P.H. Kraft, Minneapolis, Minn.; Misses Agatha and Bessie Riker, Mrs. Perry Gardner, Lansing.
