After several years of poor health, five months of which was spent in a Grand Rapids hospital this spring, Samuel Kelley, 84, died at his home in Prairie Creek at 9 o’clock Friday evening. The funeral services will be held from the Baptist church in Ionia Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The interment will be made in the Highland Park cemetery. Rev. F. J. Fitch will conduct the services. Mr. Kelley was a native of the East, but was reared in Napoleon, Ohio, where in 1861 at the age of 15, he enlisted in the Civil war. He became a member of Company E. Sixty-eighth regiment, O. V. His period of enlistment, that of three years, expired, and he re-enlisted, and served until the close of the war. He had lived in the vicinity of Ionia for 30 years. Previous to locating here he lived at Grand Ledge, and during his residence there the G.A.R. post of Grand Ledge was organized, with Mr. Kelley one of the charter members. After he came to Ionia he affiliated with the Ionia post and was active in the organization until prohibited because of his failing health. Surviving him are the widow, two nieces, Mrs. William Ducharme, Detroit, and Mrs. Lester Edwards, Ionia, and a nephew, James Kelley, Napoleon, O., and two grandchildren, Mrs. Edward Fahlman, Canada, and Francis Kelley, Ionia.
