Kelly On New Year’s day, when citizens in every walk of life lay aside their cares and in harmony with the spirit of the season halt their commercial and industrial activities to cheer their friends and neighbors with expressions of good will, a funeral cortege will proceed from the residence of Fred L. Kelly, In Danby, to Portland cemetery, where the remains of Charles M. Kelly, a continuous resident of this vicinity since 1871, will be interred. A sad beginning of the new year indeed for members of the immediate family. Chronic bladder trouble of more than 14 years standing caused the death of Charles M. Kelly at the home of his son, Fred M. Kelly in Darby Township Wednesday noon. The end had been expected for several days. At the funeral services, to be held at the home of the son Friday morning at 10:00 o’clock, Rev. W. W. Slee, of the M. E. church, will officiate. Mr. Kelly was 80 years of age on April 17th last, having been born at Middletown, Orange County, N. Y., April 17, 1834. At the age of 27 he was married to Laura Jane Davey, whose death occurred in 1899. Mr. Kelly first came to Michigan in 1861, but after remaining here for four years returned to his old home in New York. In 1871 he moved his family to an 80 acre farm northeast of Portland, in Westphalia Township, which was his home until about 25 years ago. The location is known as the Gale neighborhood. Mr. Kelly affiliated with the M. E. church in an early day and was a member of this society at the time of his death. He was the last member of a family of 15 children and was himself the father of five, only two of whom, Fred L. Kelly, of Danby and Martin Kelly of Westphalia, are now living.
