The Greenville Independent, Wednesday, October 12, 1898

Mrs. Mary B. Kemp died Friday afternoon after a short illness, in her fiftieth 
year.  She was born in Sacket Harbor, N.Y., Jan. 4, 1849.  Her maiden name was 
Mary B. Burke, daughter of Seth Burke.  In her youth her father’s family 
located near Hubbardston.  Later Miss Burke taught school in that vicinity and 
was a teacher in Greenville schools at the time of her marriage May 17, 1876, 
with O. C. Kemp from whom she was afterwards separated by a decree of 
divorce.  Clayton and Hazel, a young girl, were at the funeral of their 
mother; and O. C. Kemp and Mrs. Jennie Baxter-Peck-Worthington, a niece of 
Mrs. Kemp, of Chicago, also attended the last sad rites.

Mr. Kemp was highly respected by all who knew her and dearly beloved by her 
most intimate friends.  Her death caused deep sorrow in the community.

Her life burden grew heavier within the past few moths.  Miss Benhagle was 
sick for some time in her home and received her kindest attention before she 
went back to Ionia and died.  And A. J. Riddell, who death occurred not long 
ago, had his home with Mrs. Kemp when his last sickness took hold upon him.  

And the Spanish war added to her care and anxiety.  Her sons Sterling and 
Clayton were both members of the First Illinois Infantry of Chicago and were 
in the Santiago campaign.  The mother’s thoughts were ever with them and her 
letters of affection went out to them every day.  The fighting ceased, but 
sickness and death decimated the army and filled hospitals.
