The American Legion were the honorary pallbearers, fired the salute over the flag-draped casket and sounded taps. Mr. Kemp was born in Augusta, Kalamazoo county, February 18, 1844, and passed away November 28, 1935, at the age of 91 years, 9 months and 10 days. He came to Hubbardston in the early seventies and in 1874 was united in marriage to Clara Elizabeth Tyler, who preceded him in death by ten years. To them four children were born, the two eldest dying in early childhood. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Fred Brayton, with whom he made his home for the past ten years, and a son, Ernest, of Hubbardston. He has four grandchildren and four great- grandsons, besides two brothers, who are now in Florida. On December 8, 1862 he enlisted in Company H, 7th Regiment of the Michigan Cavalry Volunteers, to serve three years. His father had enlisted the previous year and his brother the year later. At various times he was under Gen. Custer and Gen. Sheridan. His first battle was at Culpepper Court House. Some of the others were Winchester, Coalharbor, Yellow Tavern, Cedar Creek, and the Battle of the Wilderness. He was not in the battle at Gettysburg because of illness, but his father was seriously wounded there. His cavalry did much night scouting, going behind the enemy, cutting railroads and canals so supplies could not go through. After the war he was sent west to Denver to guard stagecoaches. He was discharged of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, December 15, 1865. The funeral was held at the Fred Brayton home, 1½ miles southwest of Hubbardston, Rev. Floyd N. Drake officiating. Mrs. Ione Tabor sang “Crossing the Bar,” accompanied by Mrs. Chas. Langdon.
