                           DEATH OF JAMES KENNEDY,
              Dissolution Came at 7:30 O'clock This Morning.

James Kennedy died at 7:30 o'clock this morning, at his home on North Rich 
street. The cause of death is directly traceable to the injury to his spine, 
received in falling into a hotel elevator in Chicago some seven years ago, 
though the growth of the paralysis was slow and insidious. He was on the 
verge of dissolution yesterday morning, but the administration of heart 
tonics prolonged life briefly. 

Deceases was along time resident of Ionia, coming here as early as 1852. He 
was aged 68 years. He is especially well known as a pioneer business man and 
banker, and in his more active career, operated variously and extensively. 

With the creation of the U.S. land office in Ionia, in  1836, arose also the 
banking and exchange office of Winson & Macy, the first concern of the kind 
known to the village. It's existence, however, was brief, and within less 
than a year it had outlived its usefulness. Some years later Daniel Ball and 
James Kennedy started an exchange bank, but Ionia had no chartered bank 
until January, 1864, when the First National bank was organized, with 
Frederic Hall as president, and James Kennedy as cashier.

The funeral arrangements are not yet completed.

The funeral of James Kennedy will be attended from the home on North Rich 
street, on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. J.T. Oxtoby, D.D., of 
Saginaw, will officiate, and he will be assisted by Rev. W.H. Macpherson. 
Burial in the family lot in Highland Park.
