The only exception to this was when he proudly served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He enjoyed going to the Thursday night music program at the Commission on Aging, having coffee every morning at a local restaurant with his wife and friends and time spent with his family. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law Audrey and Jim Stencel of Ionia, three grandchildren Dawn (Jon) Hossinger of Kendallville, Ind., Russell (Jennifer) Stencel of Corona, Cal., and Paul (Sheila Cummings) Stencel of Owings, Maryland; five great-grandchildren, Alison Nelson; Candace, Courtney and Kristen Stencel; and Shane Stencel; three step great-grandchildren, Heather (Hossinger) Strycker, and Krista and Nicholas James and one great-great step grandchild Samuel Strycker; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law Charles and Velma Courser of Ionia and one sister-in-law Mrs. Edwin (Mary) Courser of Montrose and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Esther, father Henry, mother Byrel, brother Floyd and sister Lavonia Corey, and Beulah O’Shea. Visitation will be Thursday at Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home (Cook Chapel) Ionia from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Burial will be at Balcom Cemetery, Ionia.
