Ionia Sentinel Standard, 22 Aug 1923

Clarence Kenter, aged 22, of Ionia township, passed away at the Blodgett 
hospital at Grand Rapids Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock following an attack of 
lockjaw, which lasted about three days.  

About three weeks ago Mr. Kenter injured one of his fingers in a buzz plainer 
at the Pere Marquette shop.  However, the injured finger was healing rapidly 
and he would have soon been able to have returned to his work.  On Sunday 
afternoon he came into the house of his sister Mrs. Vern Piper, before going to 
the office of a local physician to have his hand dressed.  He complained of 
being unusually tired and asked her for a cup of cocoa.  When she prepared the 
cocoa his jaws had partially set and he was unable to drink much.  He was 
rushed to the office of a local physician.  Sunday morning he was taken to 
Blodgett hospital in Grand Rapids.

From the very first he was hopeful and stated that he would come through 
safely.  He held out hopes until about noon Tuesday and death occurred shortly 
after 3 o’clock.  Mr. Kenter at one time attended the Ionia high school.

He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Mrs. Vern Piper, of this city, 
Mrs. Ella Hinds, of Detroit, and Miss Clara Kenter at home.  He is also 
survived by four brothers, John Kenter of San Pedro, Cal.; Nelson, of Diamond 
Springs, Cal.; George Kenter, of Ingram, Wis.; and Stephen Kenter, of Detroit.  
Mr. Kenter was a member of the Elks lodge of this city.
