She was born March 18, 1923, in Durand, the daughter of Grace and Lester Vandermark. Nearly 70 years ago, she met her love and life partner, Elmer Herbert Kerman. They married on March 6, 1948, 63 years and 293 days ago. He survives. Maxine was one of the original outreach workers for the Ionia County Commission on Aging. She and her two other outreach workers Vi and Billy, implemented the Vial of Life program in Ionia, did taxes, blood-pressure clinics, deliver food to the homebound and more. She worked tirelessly to help seniors anytime to improve their quality of life. She also recruited Elmer a great many times to help with food, appointments or anything else which had to be done. Upon her retirement, the late Cecil Morris gave her great praise, and said, “Whoever is Maxine’s replacement has a very tough road to follow.” She loved fishing, card game Pedro, the “cousins’ lunches,” jigsaw puzzles, bluebirds, her rose garden, the Detroit Tigers and root beer floats. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law David and Janice Kerman, Grand Rapids; daughter, Diane Kerman, Saranac; grandchildren, Jennifer and Pat Nelson, Hilton, N.Y., David Paul and Amanda Kerman, Lowell; three great- grandchildren; brother, Jerry and Letha Shorna, Sun City, Ariz.; cousins, (sister) Dorothy and Rev. Robert Smith, Richard and Ruth Crandell, of Grand Rapids; and many other nieces nephews and cousins Oldest of six siblings, Maxine was preceded in death by brothers, Billy and Bob, and sisters, Bonnie and Cleo. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac with Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home, with interment at Ferris Center Cemetery, Montcalm County.
