Kern, Friend, Civic Leader & Public Servant Was City Clerk For Nine Years Clinton B. Kern, 55, civic leader and public servant, died Wednesday morning in the Greenville Memorial hospital where he had been taken following a heart attack Tuesday evening. For the past nine years, he has served Belding as their City Clerk and was a mountain of strength in the leadership for a better Belding. Born July 15, 1905, in Shelby, Michigan, he lived also in the communities of Greenville and Gowen before coming to Belding in 1926. Prior to moving to Belding, he married the former Gretchen Paulsen at Greenville. She survives. In 1932, Kern started what is now known as the Crandall market on Front St., and operated it for 12 years. He also did considerable work as a contractor in the local area. Carter Churchill, chairman of the Retail division of the Chamber of Commerce, announced that all retail stores in Belding will be closed during the Kern funeral, between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. In proclaiming that city flags be flown at half-mast for the rest of the week Wednesday, Mayor Merritt Bryant said, “It will never be fully realized what the value Clint was to the community of Belding.” “He gave everything of himself to his elected position and was truly a fine public servant. His continued civic leadership and spirit for the community will long be remembered by all,” he said. Kern was a charter member of the Belding Rotary club and was past president of that organization. he was also a member of the Belding Sportsmen’s club. He is also survived by two daughters, Miss Mary Kern of Garden City and Mrs. Ronald Hansen of Grand Rapids; three sons, Donald of Lansing, Dick of Belding and Frank of Milford. His two sisters and one brother also survive. They are Mrs. Merrell Connell of Greenville, Miss Maryon Kern of Greenville and John Kern of Belding. His parents were Otis and Estella Kern, both deceased. He had seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Huffman funeral home Friday at 2 p.m. with burial following in the Otisco cemetery. The Rev. St. Clair Parsons will officiate. Offices of the City Clerk will be closed in honor of Kern on Friday.
