He was transferred to Dearborn from the Saginaw hospital where he was a patient for about a month. He had been ill for some time but continued his work until about three months ago. Word was received by Ionia relatives last week that his condition was critical. Born in Ionia, August 8, 1895, the son of Gilbert and Annie Ketchum, he attended the Ionia public schools and later worked as foreman of the upholstering department of the Pere Marquette railroad company here. He was transferred to Saginaw eight years ago and worked in the same department there. His family moved to Saginaw last March from their home on Morse street. He married Gladys Wright of Ionia, June 18, 1923. He was a member of the Ionia Masons, F. and A.M., and attended the First Baptist church in Ionia. Mr. Ketchum was a World war veteran. He entered the United States army November 18, 1917, at Ionia and left the United States for foreign service, February 10, 1918. From March 6, 1918 to January 1, 1919 he served with the French forces and left France on his return to the United States February 10, 1919. He served in the Somme defensive March 21 to April 6, 1918. He was last assigned to Company I, 1st A.S.M. regiment and was honorable discharged from the service at Camp Custer July 1, 1919. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Margaret, 16, and Alice, 10; his mother, Mrs. Annie Ketchum, of Ionia, one brother, Merrell, of Ionia and one sister, Mrs. Harry Hamlin, also of Ionia. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Myers funeral home. Rev. George Wolcock will officiate and interment will be at Highland Park cemetery. The casket will be opened at the Myers funeral home until Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. when it will be closed. The Masons will have charge of the grave service.
