Another of the pioneer residents of Ionia County departed forever, Samuel 
Thomas Kidd, brother of James M., was born in Orange County, N. Y.  May 6, 
1823 and came to Michigan (unreadable).  They settled first at Pontiac, but in 
1843 bought land in Orleans, where they settled in 1844, the father S. T. and 
Robert. W. each making a location in that Township.

S. T. was married to Helen Lewis in 1847.  She died about 1860, leaving three 
still surviving children:  William L., an employee of the America Express 
Company in this city; Thomas and Alice, wife of Frank Howard of Isabella 
County.  In 1863, he was married to Amelia Chittle of Orleans, who died three 
years ago, leaving two children:  Walter M. of St Louis, Mich., and James C. 
of Cincinnati.

Decedent sold his farm in Orleans three years ago, and bought a place in this 
city which he has since called his home, although he has spent much time in 
visiting among his children.  He came to the home of his son, William L., two 
weeks ago.  Although in feeble health for some years, he was confined to the 
house only two days before his death, which occurred at 1:30 Thursday morning.

He was a man of sterling character, of the pioneer type, well esteemed in the 
community, in which he was recognized as a good citizen and neighbor.  He 
served as treasurer of Orleans Township in 1849, and as clerk in 1854, and was 
one of the early masters of Orleans grange.  The funeral service was held at 
the residence of his son W. L. Kidd in Ionia Saturday and his remains were 
interred in Orleans cemetery.
