M. Kidd Dies Saturday Mrs. Lucy V. Kidd, 85, president of the Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Inc., and widow of the late Fred M. Kidd, St., publisher for many years of The Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard, died at the Ionia Manor late Saturday afternoon, October 19. Mrs. Kidd became ill May 7 when she suffered a light stroke while shopping. Her condition worsened within the next day and she was admitted to Ionia County Memorial hospital May 9 where she remained until June 28 when she was transferred to the Ionia Manor. Her condition became critical Wednesday, October 16. Mrs. Kidd had lived all her married life in Ionia being married June 21, 1910 at South Bend, Ind. She had been associated with the newspaper publishing business in Ionia until her death, a period of more than 50 years. She was born in Hadley, Pa., near Pittsburgh, the daughter of David R. and Harriett Janes Hayes Vaughn, January 19, 1883. She attended grade school in Pennsylvania. She moved with her family to South Bend, Ind., and was graduated from South Bend high school. For one year she attended the University of Chicago majoring in home economics. Mrs. Kidd taught night school in home economics in Chicago at Hull House at the time when that institution was being directed by Jane Adams. She was graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. in home economics in 1907. She taught one year in Lancaster, Pa., at the YWCA and one year in the Cleveland, Ohio, public schools. She was married to Fred M. Kidd of Ionia in South Bend, June 21, 1910 and moved to Ionia where she since has resided at 483 East Washington. Mrs. Kidd had been a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church and transferred her affiliation to the Ionia church when she moved here. She had lived in Ionia for a short time previously when her father was freight agent of the railroad, then known as the Pere Marquette and later the C & O. She was active in Ionia women’s organizations until later years. She was one of the oldest remaining members of Ionia Women’s Literary club and she had belonged for many years to Ionia Country club and several social groups. She had been president of the Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Inc., since the corporation was founded in 1930 and active in its management in the publication of The Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard and during the past few years of The Ionia County News. At the time of his death in January 1961, her husband had been a life-long newspaper publisher in Ionia. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Jack L. Welch and son, Fred M. Kidd, Jr. both of Ionia; five grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Amy Gilger of Hadley, Pa. Two daughters died many years ago. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Boynton-Leddick funeral home in Ionia. A memorial for Ionia Presbyterian church is being established.
