Owing to poor health he had led a life of retirement during the past 30 years, dividing his time between his home in the village and his fine 80-acre farm in Danby. He was a congenial old gentleman and his death is keenly regretted by his many acquaintances in the community. Mr. Kilmartin was born in Limerick, Ireland, 77 years ago last Christmas day. At the age of eight he left the old sod in company with his parents and came to Ann Arbor, Mich., where he resided until coming to Ionia in the early sixties. On October 12, 1863, he married Ellen Humphrey, of Ionia, and in 1880 Mr. and Mrs. Kilmartin settled on the farm in Danby where deceased remained until his death. Mr. Kilmartin was the father of eight children, all of whom are living, and all of whom were here for the funeral. They are Mrs. John McCourt, Mrs. James Kissane and Edward Kilmartin, of Portland, B. F. Kilmartin of Kalamazoo; Charles A. Kilmartin, of Chicago; Mrs. Allen Rock, Lyons, Mich.; G. D. Kilmartin, New York City; J. W. Kilmartin, Syracuse, N.Y. Besides the widow and children, a sister, Mrs. Margaret Troy, of Grand Rapids, survives. Rev. Fr. Koelzer, of St. Patrick church, celebrated requiem high mass at 9:00 o’clock Monday morning, after which the remains were borne to the Catholic division of Portland cemetery for burial. Those from a distance who were here for the last rites were Mr. Robt. Cain and daughter, Addie, Mrs. Edward Price, Wm. Kilmartin and Miss Mary Kilmartin, Ionia; Mr. and Mrs. Anthony DeFraud and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard F. Kilmartin, Kalamazoo; Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Kilmartin, Syracuse, N.Y.; Misses Theresa and Josephine Kilmartin, Caledonia; Mrs. C. Cahill, Lansing.
