He graduated from Milan High School, Milan, Michigan and Michigan State University. He left this life on Saturday, May 21, 2005 at the University of Michigan Hospital, after a brave battle with emphysema. He was employed by the State of Michigan; working at Newberry State Hospital, Michigan Veterans Facility, Ionia State Hospital, Riverside Center, and retired in 1991 as Business Manager at the Mt. Pleasant Regional Facility. Bob expressed his love of this country by serving 32 years in the Michigan National Guard and Army Reserves. He retired with the rank of Colonel. He was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Ionia, a former board member of the United Way and the Ionia Theater. He was a 4H leader for 25 years and served on both the state and local 4H Advisory councils. Currently he was on the board of directors of the Ionia Horse Trails Association. He had a special love of horses, travel, and the Ionia Free Fair. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Norma, his daughters Glenda of Milan and Marcia of Chicago, grandson Christopher Housel, son-in-law, James Housel and family, Cindy, Amanda, and David, brother-in-law Gerald Cobb and family of Lawrence, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Karen Lynn Housel. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, at First Presbyterian Church in Ionia with Rev. Judith Shaver officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
