Mary's parents, Isabel and Antonio Baptista, were from Madeira Island, Portugal, married in Lowell, Massachusetts, and eventually settled in San Jose, California. During WWII, Mary met and married Boyd Benedict who was serving in the Navy. After the war, they moved back to Boyd's childhood home in Portland, Michigan and eventually settled in East Lansing. Boyd and Mary moved to Jordan Lake in Lake Odessa in 1972. Boyd died in 1973 and Mary married Richard Kimble of Lake Odessa on June 28, 1975. Mary lived a long and satisfying life, raising three children, Michael Benedict (Judy), Richard Benedict (Ellen), and Toni Landick (Steven). Her stepchildren, Gary Kimble (Wendy) and Jay Kimble (Jeanette), were a special part of her life these last 39 years. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren who brought her great joy. Mary worked for and retired from the Fisher Body Automobile plant in Lansing and went on to work with developmentally disabled adults at the EBI sheltered workshop in Lake Odessa. Mary enjoyed many hobbies and had a variety of interests that included service to her Catholic parish, St. Edward's church in Lake Odessa. Mary was well known for her beautiful singing voice and she sang joyfully throughout her life. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Isabel and Antonio, her first husband, Boyd, her brothers, Joseph and Raymond Baptista, and her sister, Carmen Gouveia. Surviving Mary are her husband, Richard Kimble, her children, step-children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her sisters, Nina Ramos and Emily Turnipseed of California. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014 at St. Edward's Church in Lake Odessa. Following Mass, a luncheon will be provided by Mary's friends in the St. Edward's Community Center. A celebration of Mary's life and legacy is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the Church's community center. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Great Lakes Caring Hospice, 630 Kenmoor Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546 or St. Edward’s Catholic Church will be gratefully accepted. Koops Funeral Chapel of Lake Odessa coordinated arrangements on behalf of Mary's family. Mary will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
