John King was the son of Gilbert H. and Mary King, who were among the earliest settlers of Orleans township. He was the second child of a family of eleven children, five of whom are now living, and are as follows: Mrs. M. J. Holcomb, Orleans township; Mrs. L. C. Devendorf, Belding; Mrs. M. S. Boss, Cook’s Corners; Mrs. Wid. Howe, Greenville; and Kim King, Belding. Mr. King was born in the township of Catlin, Tompkins county, N.Y., May 1, 1832, coming to Marshall, Mich., with his parents in 1837, when five years old, and afterwards, with his parents, moving to the old homestead in Orleans township in 1842. He was united in marriage to Lucy M. Hoyt of Orleans township, July 4, 1858. To this union four children were born: Fred E. King, now a resident of Negaunee, Mich., Bert G. King who resides in El Centro, Calif., Mary L. C., wife of Frank Freeman, who died November 19, 1910, and Dan H. King who resides on the home farm. Mr. King was a man of sterling traits of character who lived an exemplary Christian life, and was devoted to his home and family, who will miss the love and companionship of a kind and affectionate husband and father and whose friends were all who knew him. Besides the widow who has tenderly ministered to his wants during all his long and patient suffering, and the three living children, to whom are left the loving memory of husband and father, there are ten grandchildren and two great- grandchildren who remember one of the best of grandpa’s. The grandchildren are: Karl King, Salt Lake City, Utah; Bert K. Freeman, Vassillia, California; Frank W. Freeman, Jr., Union Centre, Wis.; Ivo P. King, Orleans; Neva B. King, Belding; Floyd L. King, John King, Dorothy King, El Centro, Calif.; Ceresta E. King, and Esther L. King, Orleans township. The great grandchildren are Jessie O. King, Orleans; and Mary J. King, Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral services were held at the home on Monday, conducted by Rev. W. E. Duty of the M. E. church, Belding, and the interment was in Orleans cemetery.
