He was born in New York State, September 8, 1830, and came to Michigan with his parents in 1835. For a few years the family lived in Calhoun county, moving to Orleans township where they arrived February 14, 1842. October 21, 1855 he married Charlotte M. Holcomb, who died December 11, 1905. To them were born three children, Nate G. King, who lives at Lakeview, Michigan; Lila, wife of E. E. Chapple, who died in 1886; Ella, now Mrs. Grant Steele of Belding. In 1866 he bought the farm now owned by W. C. Spicer on the state road in the west part of the city, selling it in 1885 and moving to Ionia. Most of these years he was engaged in lumber operations, locating timber lands and acting as foreman of lumber camps, working for Wilson, Luther & Wilson, Ambrose Atwood and the Lovelands. He enlisted in Company H, 10th Michigan volunteer cavalry and served until honorably discharged June 14, 1865. He joined the Masonic order at Greenville in 1873, and later became a charter member of Belding Lodge. He has been an earnest, consistent Christian many years and was a member of the Central M. E. Church, Belding, at the time of his death. He is survived by a son, a daughter, five grandchildren, two brothers and four sisters. The funeral will be held at the home of his daughter Friday morning. Rev. G. W. Maxwell officiating; burial at Highland Park Cemetery, Ionia. The bearers will be his four nephews, Dan King, Will Cobb, George Wiley and Judd King.
