Mrs. Frank W. King of Charlotte Killed – Was Struck by Train Near Home The following dispatch to the Detroit Journal regarding the accident is as follows: “While Mrs. Frank W. King, aged 65 years, was returning from a neighbor’s Thursday night, she was struck on the Clinton street crossing by a Grand Trunk train and thrown 60 feet. The accident occurred directly in front of her home. She died half an hour later without regaining consciousness. Her head was split open and left leg broken. The crossing is only a few rods from a sharp curve, and it was dark, as the street light was out at the time. The engineer did not see Mrs. King and the Grand Trunk officials did not learn of the affair until notified by the Freight agent Fuller, who saw the accident. Apparently Mrs. King tried to cross the track ahead of the engine. The train was late and in consequence was at a higher rate than usual at that point. Mrs. King was the mother of Mrs. Carroll Brown, one of the most promising of Charlotte’s society women.” Mr. and Mrs. King were residents and owned a farm in Grattan about twenty years ago which they sold and came to Belding to live. Mr. King built the H.J. Leonard house and also owned and operated the old Franklin Hotel property, they afterward moved to Charlotte.
