He was born in Wilshire County, England, Oct 20, 1807, and came to Canada in 1831. Was married there in 1833 and was engaged in farming. In 1849 he and his family, consisting of wife and six children, came to Ionia and settled on the farm where he has lived until his death. For many years he was engaged in farming, but old age and failing health admonished him, and he retired from business. He early developed a strong physical constitution which lasted him for many years. He was scarcely ever confined to his bed until he was prostrated by the fall which has taken him from us. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the house. There was a very large attendance of relatives and friends. The pastor, Rev. O. E. Wightman, preached a brief and beautiful sermon from the test: 1st Cor., 13:12. The services were as follows: Scripture lesson, John 14; hymn by the choir “Why do we mourn for dying friends”; prayer; hymn “Come ye disconsolate”; sermon; closing hymn, “It is well with my soul.” During the most of his life he was a believer and professor of the Christian religion, and for many years he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and had a firm faith in the doctrine of immortality. Happy are they who can, like the deceased leave behind them the record of meeting death with a cheerful hope. He leaves a wife and children and many friends to mourn his loss.
