He landed in New York, Sept. 18, 1854. After stopping there for a short time, he started for Ionia, coming by rail as far as Detroit, and walking the remainder of the way, as there was then no railroad between Detroit and Ionia. He arrived in Ionia Dec. 25, 1856, and remained there two years; then went to Salem, Washtenaw county, and was employed on a farm until the beginning of the late war. He enlisted at Ann Arbor, and went out with Co. F, 20th Michigan infantry. He served from the beginning until the end. At the close of the war he was married at Ann Arbor, Mich., and came directly to Ionia, and purchased the farm on which he lived until his death, with the exception of three years of which time he was a resident of this city. He contracted rheumatism during his hardships while serving his country, which never left him. For six weeks previous to his death he had been a constant, patient sufferer. During this time he desired to become a Christian and place himself in the hands of the Lord, which he did, and made the Evangelical church the one of his choice. He was conscious until the last, and passed away to join his Maker without a struggle. He has always been a kind and generous neighbor, a hard working and industrious man, and in his relation as husband and father, he was always found loving and true. He leaves a wife and three daughters: Mrs. Jennie Blackmore, of this city; Mrs. Priscilla Snobble, of Berlin; Miss Essie at home; and two brothers: Michael, of this city, and John, of Carson City; besides other more distant relatives and friends to mourn his untimely loss. His interment was at Oak Hill cemetery.
