His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kitson, were among the pioneer settlers of Ionia county, having located there in 1837. His father passed away in 1894 and his mother in 1903. His death is the first in the family of seven children, the youngest of whom is 52 years of age. He was married to Adell Heald, February 25, 1881, and to this union was born a daughter, Hester Ann, wife of Merritt Hoyt. They located on a farm adjoining the old homestead where they lived until Sept. 1, 1909, when they moved to Barryton, Mich., and from there came to Whitehall about Christmas, 1911. He was converted to God March, 1885 at which time he had a very marked experience, although previous to that time he had lived a very good moral life. The spirit of God came to him while he was at work in the field with his brother and turning to him he said; “Ben, I’ve got it.” He remained a faithful member of the Methodist church until his death which occurred December 15, 1913 at the age of 56 years, 4 months, 8 days. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son-in-law and one grandson, Master Fred Hoyt, also the three brothers and three sisters: J. D. Kitson, Mrs. C. A. Palmer and B. M. Kitson, of Ionia, Mich.; W. H. Kitson of Rockford, Mich., and Mrs. J. A. May and Mrs. M. H. Weller of Grand Rapids, Mich., besides a host of friends. A short service was held at the residence at 9 o’clock Wednesday morning after which the body was taken to Ionia. A large number of friends attended the funeral services at the Methodist church, conducted by Jacob Steffee, pastor at Whitehall assisted by Rev. Callen. The music was by the regular Methodist quartet. The bearers, all former schoolmates of the deceased, were: O. E. Newton, Wm. Reynolds, Oscar Whorley, Ed. Cowan, Elmer Cowan, John McKendry, Jas. Dildine and Fred Gould. Interment took place in Oak Hill cemetery. There was an abundance of extremely beautiful flowers as evidence of the high esteem in which the deceased was held.
